What is the point of this war ?
Is it time for the Scottish public to demand an end to this American/British war and ask that no more of our troops are sent to their death in a war that we can't win. Is it all about America and their greed for oil and world domination?

My opinion on this matter is that although I did not agree with the Afghan war when it started I now feel the British Government, the Americans and all NATO forces have a job to finish, young men and women have lost their lives or been seriously injured and it would be a travesty if they were killed or injured in vain, so we should keep the troops in the region and continue to fight against the Taliban.
My only concern is that all the forces out there have the very best equipment available.
Support the troops!!!
Now all the intelligent members may have an opinion Jailer |

The Cat,
I totally agree that we should give the troops our full support. However, this is a war that we can't win. We are sending them there to die and the death toll will continue to rise. As you pointed out we made a mistake in entering into this conflict but would the British government not win more respect by pulling our troops out before we lose more lives.
When you look at the figures of the NATO countries we supply more troops than any other country outside the USA. The cost of this war and Iraq has cost us lives and billions of pounds. Surely this money could be put to better use improving education, housing and the NHS. |

I dont get this argument that we were wrong to go in, but now that we have, we should see it through. It makes no sense to me at all.
Aside from that, it is a war that we have no hope in hell of ever winning, ask the Russians. (its not even our war to win)!! You would like to think that none of our troops will have died in vain in this war, but lets face it they have. Staying there and simply adding to the total doesn't make it better, it makes it worse.
Mailers point about the govt would be better respected if they pulled the troops out now, is unfortunatley what is going to lead to a large number yet who are still to lose their lives. The govt trying to figure out whats the best face saver they can come up with. The priority is not political reputations here, yes they are going to get it tight if they change their minds and withdraw... but its still the right decision to make. |

missed this one!
Sad sad sadly this is an impossible contest.
If the rest of the world had wanted afghanistan to be shocked and awed theyd be taking part
We have "hitched our wagon" to uncle sam and I hate to tell all you john wayne fans but their no a very popular country anywhere other than here!
Im a wee bit like Muhammed Ali (as inn cassius clay) - "aint got no fight them viet-kong"
Though watching all those wee laddies coming back in coffins or with life altering injury is absoulutely heart breaking!
Pulling out the troops is an election winner on its own! |

This is a toughie. In essence I agree with the majority here. Unwinable war in particular. I don't think pulling out (oh er missus) equals lives lost in vain, as I too believe that we're only going to see more and more of our troops dead or mutilated. That said. What if it is the case that by withdrawing (actor, nun etc) and letting them get on with it a) tens of thousands of Afghans will be slaughtered and b) we are just setting ourselves up for multiple terrorist attacks on our shores (even if it is mainly Eng**nd). I mean, I may find myself visiting down there from temps to temps. |

Just been to a conference with sps. C ontingency plans are being drawn up and spaces in jails being looked at for a civil war in the south of england in 20 years time between us and muslims. At present Leicester is now 52% asian.Looks like half of england and wales will be moving up here which will boost our population and we will have a great football team. |

With Scotland being an independent country in 20 years time the Welsh and English will need to look elsewhere for a new home with Scotland imposing strict border controls. McBeefy vote for independence and you can watch England's civil war from the comfort of your living room on tv.
Re The Afghan War
It's time to smell the coffee 'Britain' are the Gretna/Livingston of the World trying to play at a level that we are no longer capable. Let's step down a division and survive leaving the world's elite to play in the champions league.
Gaffy, you are concerned about the terrorist threat. The only reason that there is a terrorist threat is because 'Britain' decided to jump about with the big boys and hang out with USA in the playground. Let's take a leaf out of our Scandanavian neighbours and keep our heads down and concentrate on internal affairs.
After all we've already wasted billions on Iraq and Afghasnistan when the money could have been spent improving our schools, hospitals and transport.
And don't forget we'll need to rebuild Hadrians wall to stop the English/Welsh trying to get into our country in 20 years time.
And finally Andye the Broons are keich. |

Craig, I hear what you say and I wish it was that simple. As much as I am in agreement for the troops to return home, I just think we are in too deep. It's now too late and this country will pay a heavy price for stupidly following Uncle Sam. |
