Scotland supporters will be able to rekindle memories of the Home International Championships after confirmation that the national team will join Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland in the inaugural Carling Nations Cup, to be staged in Dublin next year.
The tournament will be played in a league format with six matches between the four neighbouring teams, the first two taking place at the new Aviva Stadium on February 8 and 9 and the remaining four taking place the week commencing Monday May 23.
Scotland national coach Craig Levein is looking forward to the revival of the classic series. “There aren’t many opportunities for me to gather the squad and see them perform together as a team, so this new tournament is welcome as it will allow us to take part in some competitive matches ahead of our next Euro 2012 qualifying games,” he said.
George Peat, the Scottish FA's Acting Chief Executive, added: “This new tournament will be an exciting addition to the international calendar and I am sure that Scotland fans will relish the chance to support their team against our neighbours in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Having recently announced Carling as the Official Beer of the Scotland Team, we are delighted that they are to be the title sponsor for the Carling Nations Cup, and look forward to working with them to create a fantastic tournament.”
Craig Burley, the former Scotland internationalist, joined legends Pat Bonner, Pat Jennings and Ian Walsh for the announcement in Dublin and said: “As a player you want to play in competitive games, they are the ones that really matter, I’m sure this tournament will be well received by the players and the fans. It’s great to see a brand like Carling, which is a huge supporter of football, lend its support to this tournament
